Verification of Payee (VOP) is a European name-checking service that helps protect you from fraud and payment mistakes.
Before you make a payment within Greece or the Eurozone, VOP checks whether the beneficiary name you entered matches the name associated with the IBAN held by the recipient's bank.
This check helps you confirm that your payment details are being sent to the intended recipient before the payment is completed.
How your information is protected
To perform the verification, banks and payment service providers securely exchange limited information needed to confirm whether the beneficiary details match.
All participating institutions follow European regulatory and security standards when processing this information.
How VOP works
When creating a new payment or updating an existing beneficiary, you enter:
The recipient's IBAN
The name of the person or business you want to pay
We compare this information with the details held by the recipient's bank and return a verification result before the payment is completed.
The verification is performed in real time and typically takes 2–5 seconds.
Understanding your verification result
Verification result | What it means | What you should do |
Match | The beneficiary name matches the details associated with the recipient's bank account. | Review your payment details and continue if everything is correct. |
Close Match | The beneficiary name is similar to the name registered on the recipient's account, but it is not an exact match. | Carefully review the details. Minor spelling differences or naming variations may be the cause. Before proceeding, confirm the details with the beneficiary if you are unsure. If you continue and the payment is sent to the wrong account, we may not be able to recover the funds. |
No Match | The beneficiary name does not match the details associated with the recipient's bank account. | Contact the person or business you are trying to pay and confirm their payment details before proceeding. If you continue without correcting the information and the payment is sent to the wrong account, we may not be able to recover the funds. |
Not Possible | The verification could not be completed. This may be due to a technical issue, an inactive account, or because the recipient's bank does not currently support VOP. | Try again later or confirm the payment details directly with the beneficiary before proceeding. |
Invalid IBAN | The IBAN entered is not valid. | Check the IBAN and enter it again. |
Other verification responses
You may occasionally see additional responses such as:
Verification type not possible
Technical issue
If this happens, carefully review the payment details and confirm them directly with the beneficiary before proceeding.
Important
A successful verification confirms whether the beneficiary name matches the IBAN information provided by the recipient's bank. It does not guarantee that a payment is free from fraud or that the recipient is trustworthy.
