MB Way Payment Method: Quick & safe payments

MB WAY is a Portuguese interbank network. It is the largest interbank network in Portugal. It allows the customers of 21 participating banks (100% coverage in the Portuguese market) to transfer money.

MB WAY is a payment method where the clients insert their mobile number (registered in the MB WAY system with an MB Card) and receive a validation message to authorize the payment.

MB WAY payments are supported both for Card Not Present (eCommerce) and In-Person transactions.

  • For eCommerce transactions, customers can complete their payment through the Smart Checkout environment.

  • For In-Person transactions, customers can pay by scanning an MB WAY QR Code generated by the POS terminal through the dedicated MB WAY payment option (available on supported devices and software versions)

How it works

Smart Checkout

Steps:

  1. At the online checkout, the customer selects MB WAY as their preferred payment method:

  2. The customer is then notified that they must complete the transaction from within their MB WAY app:

  3. Within the app, the payment should be listed within the My payments section:

  4. The customer simply navigates to this section to see the payment and click on ACCEPT:

  5. The customer can then select their preferred payment card before clicking on Accept purchase to complete the payment:

In Store Paydroid Versions (PAX)

Steps for payment with MB WAY (In-store):

  1. Customer scans the QR code with the phone’s camera

  2. Terminal redirects to Smart Checkout

  3. Select the MB WAY payment method

  4. Enter the mobile number (registered with MB WAY)

  5. Confirm & approve the payment

Important :

Customers should not use their MB WAY app to scan the QR code, as in this case the payment will not be completed. The process must always start by scanning through the phone’s camera, in order for the redirection to Smart Checkout to occur correctly.

In Store SPOC Versions (Ciontek,Sunmi,Viva Terminal App Android & iOS)

Primary Payment Method:

  • In Portugal: MB WAY QR Code is shown as the main payment option (no extra taps).

  • Outside Portugal: MB WAY QR appears when “payment with QR Code” is chosen.

  1. Availability: Supported on all SPOC and Paydroid terminals. On SPOC terminals running software version 5.37.10 and above, MB WAY is available as a dedicated payment option. On Paydroid devices, and on SPOC terminals running software versions below 5.37.10, MB WAY payments are processed through a Smart Checkout redirect.

  2. Merchant's account: Merchants do not need to have an account with MB WAY. Customers must own a Portuguese Bank Account.

  3. Payment method type: Asynchronous - payments are not confirmed immediately, it may take up to 4 minutes to receive payment confirmation. You need to set up webhooks to get notified for asynchronous payments

  4. Refunds: Supports partial and full refunds

  5. Recurring payments: Not yet supported

  6. Pre-authorizations: Not yet supported

  7. 0% Cashback: Supported (for both online and card-present transactions)

  8. MOTO: Not supported

  9. Cancellation: Supports cancellation

  10. Disputes: Supported

  11. DCC: Not supported

  12. Surcharge: Not supported

  13. Tipping: Not supported

  14. Installments: Not supported

  15. Tokenization: No

  16. Restricted MCC: None

  17. Μerchant countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain

  18. Customer countries: Portugal

  19. Pricing: Please refer to our pricing page under the main navigation for more information.

  20. Settlement: All settlement takes place next day for confirmed payments / successful transactions (i.e. have statusId = F)

  21. Cross-currency payments: Not yet supported

  22. Additional notes: The Email address and Customer Name fields within Smart Checkout are optional

How to activate:

Activation of this payment method is instant. Once activated, merchants will immediately be able to accept payments via MB WAY.

  1. Sign in to your Viva.com.

  2. Click on Settings > API Access and scroll down to the MB WAY (Payment Method) section.

  3. Click on the Enable MB WAY as a payment method.

  4. MB WAY will be activated and an MB WAY ID allocated to you

If you would like to deactivate MB WAY, click on the Disable MB WAY as a payment method button.
